They aren't quite rap, and they aren't quite metal. They aren't always serious, but they can't be written off as comedy band, either. Above all, they aren't polite. They're Molotov, and they're a genre unto themselves. When stores in Mexico banned their 1997 debut ¿Dónde Jugarán Las Niñas?—the title is a risque pun on the name of one of rock group Maná's best-selling albums—the foursome literally took to the streets to sell the CD themselves. But the album wasn't all raunch and ribaldry—alongside song-titles that would make a tomato blush were hard-hitting political anthems such as the album opener "Que no te haga bobo Jacobo" and the anti-racism focused "Voto latino."
Now, 18 years, seven albums, and four Latin Grammys after Molotov began their determined climb to the top, they show no signs of slowing down. Besides topping charts with hits such as "Frijolero" and "Gimme tha Power", they have been heard on the soundtracks of Y Tu Mamá También, Breaking Bad, and every censor's nightmares.
