The stages at the UH School of Theatre & Dance, named 2012’s Best College Theater by the Houston Press, spring to life with professional-level drama and dance performed by its talented students. Part of what will be a stellar 2012–13 season, UH School of Theatre & Dance puts up Mother Courage and Her Children (October 26–November 4), a performance of Tony Kushner’s English adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s classic. Moved from the 17th-century battlefields of the Thirty Years’ War to a dystopian 1930s American Midwest, the play follows the titular character and her ill-fated brood as they flee clashing armies and try to survive in the midst of the famine-choked dustbowl. The Snow Queen (November 30–December 7) adapts Hans Christian Andersen’s most ambitious fairy tale, telling the tale of two young children, Kai and Gerda, as they struggle to find their way through the evil machinations of the eponymous monarch and her troll compatriot. Written by the Gallic master of farce Georges Feydeau, Paradise Hotel (February 22–March 3) follows the marital indiscretions of a wealthy businessman as his efforts to bed his partner’s wife in a hotel are thwarted by mad staff and nosy guests, who keep popping in to lecture them on anatomy. UH Ensemble Dance Works (April 26–28) shows off the choreographic innovations of these aspiring pros at their dance program.
Though UH School of Theatre & Dance sometimes features a discounted price online, this deal still offers the best deal available.
