Dating its human-adjacent history all the way back to the 17th century, the park is a memorial site for the Revolutionary War Battle of Spencer’s Ordinary and features an authentic 18th-century cemetery and a 17th-century colonial domicile where archaeological research is still ongoing. Freedom Park was also home to one of the nation's earliest Free Black Settlements and three historically-accurate cabins from that period have been recreated and furnished with items from those times. Located only a short drive away from both Williamsburg and Richmond, it makes for a great visit spot for history lovers and nature aficionados alike.

The great woods are spread over 600 acres, making it a great challenge for anyone to visit every corner. Instead, guests are invited to walk along two miles of multiuse trails, including a one-mile ADA-accessible paved trail. 20 miles of mountain bike trails wind between trees, creeks, meadows and other park attractions. Over 800 species of native vegetation can be marveled at inside the Botanical Garden, where visitors can also take part in monthly educational programs. To add a cherry on top, the park features an Interpretive Center, boasting exhibits of artefacts recovered during the construction of the park, and an interactive kiosk that provides visitors a visual tour of the park, its amenities, wildlife and history.
