Located in Western Springs, Bemis Woods is the westernmost part of the Forest Preserve chain that borders Salt Creek. 480 acres of natural woods offer a range of recreational activities, including many open spaces ideal for picnics and the signature, unpaved, Salt Creek trail that meanders in the shade of aged oaks.

Salt Creek itself presents an attractive opportunity for paddling a canoe or a kayak through a six-mile water trail that snakes through the area all the way to the Brookfield Zoo. Those wishing to enjoy nature by foot are welcome to use any of the unpaved trails that wind through Bemis and the adjacent Salt Creek Woods Nature Preserve. Luckily for visitors, these five miles of trails provide a varied cross-country skiing terrain in the winter, combining long stretches of even going with gentle slopes and some steep ascents.
