The Yeoman of the Guard

Not content with H.M.S. Pinafore or The Mikado, composer Arthur Sullivan wanted to do something even more ambitious -- something truly grand -- for his 11th collaboration with W. S. Gilbert. The result was the musical high point of both their careers: The Yeomen of the Guard. Sullivan's finest score reaches the heights of "grand opera" while Gilbert's libretto mixes merry melodrama with true tragedy, for an effect that is hilarious and heartbreaking. Colonel Fairfax faces execution on false charges of sorcery brought by his scheming cousin. In order to keep his estate from his betrayer, a wedding is hastily arranged for the condemned man. He escapes the chopping block into a far more dangerous world of love, jealousy, intrigue and betrayal. The award-winning Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society has been producing the musicals of the beloved duo for over 60 years, and they now bring The Yeomen of the Guard back to the Bagley Wright Theatre at Seattle Rep.
