Now that the famous Orient Express is ceasing operation forever, you may never live out your New Year's resolution to eat Bosnian food and gather a train full of people into a single car before revealing which one of them is the murderer. Today's Groupon will help with the first part, at least: for $15, you get $35 worth of eclectic Bosnian and Eastern European cuisine at Grbic Restaurant in Dutchtown. Grbic was named Best Bosnian Restaurant by the Riverfront Times for its carefully crafted Eastern European dishes and homey decor.
Hearty schnitzel and goulash are the savory backbone of Grbic's menu. The Riverfront Times recommends the cevapi, Grbic's "spicy, earthy and absolutely top-notch" version of the famous Bosnian beef sausage ($18 for a sample platter with cevapi). Dine on Grbic's signature sarma—a cabbage roll stuffed with beef and rice and topped with a red sauce ($11). The beef goulash ($12) is "good enough to make diners groan with delight," according to Gayot. Grbic also serves cross-cultural desserts such as tiramisu ($5) and baklava ($5), as well as an admirable selection of wine and spirits.
Built inside a restored old Bailey Farms Dairy building, Grbic is spacious without feeling impersonal, while the brick walls, oil paintings, and murals evoke the simple comforts of an Old Country country kitchen. Service is friendly, gracious, and unhurried. To really feel like you're on a layover to Transylvania, stop by on Friday and Saturday evenings after 9:30 p.m. for live Bosnian music.
Reviews
The Riverfront Times named Grbic Best Bosnian Restaurant, and Gayot reviewed it:
- The Grbic family had the right idea when they turned a south-city dairy into a banquet hall-size Bosnian restaurant... the generously portioned dishes — crafted with obvious care — are a shining example of true comfort food. Grbic's menu draws from several European nations, not just Bosnia, and the result is a delightful mishmash of schnitzels, pasta dishes and expertly grilled meat and seafood. – Riverfront Times
- The fare, described as eclectic Eastern European, is heavily Bosnian, with influences of Germany (schnitzel) and Italy (tiramisu). Specialties include sarma, beef and rice wrapped in cabbage leaves, and cevapi, spicy Bosnian grilled sausage. – Gayot
Yelpers give Grbic a perfect five-star rating, and two Citysearchers give it 4.5:
- This place does Bosnian right. When I say that, I don't just mean the food. EVERYTHING in this place is done well. – Amanda Z., Yelp
- Absolutely, every dish was succulent... But the best of all is the service you receive... They all will make sure you are completely satisfied. – LSBone, Citysearch
- I can't begin to say enough good things about this restaurant. – Nancy A., Yelp
