About Han Mi Martial Arts/Gracie Frederick
Han Mi Martial Arts was started in 2012 by Matthew Thompson to teach authentic Taekwondo and Hapkido classes. As time went, Matthew found the need to refocus the school away from sport Taekwondo training and to emphasize self defense - recognizing this as the sincere interest of the majority people that want to train. Matthew's background as a music educator, non profit leader, and artist informed his unique culture inside of Han Mi - genuinely friendly, welcoming, and encouraging of questions from students. Changing the culture from an imposing and rigid tone to a curious and empowering one seemed to be a game changer for students. In this way, it was possible to model humility and seeking education as a commonplace thing rather than some distant quality to aspire to. It is this culture that, when internalized by the student, becomes a vital part of that person's success in anything they do later on in life. This kind of study then is relevant to all people regardless of their age or any other quality. In keeping with that culture, Coach Matt brought Gracie Jiu-jitsu to Han Mi. It was obvious as to which branch of Jiu-jitsu to connect with when considering the culture of Han Mi. Rener and Ryron Gracie of Gracie University were the perfect embodiment of this culture along with the emphasis on self-defense before sport - the same value espoused by other famous practitioners from Royce to Rickson to Grandmaster Helio Gracie himself. Also adding to the culture of humble studiousness is the practice of Kendo. The quiet stoic nature of Kendo study contrasts wildly with the energy during keiko or sparring. Kendo's study of psychology, centeredness, and controlled intensity is perfect for our approach to martial arts as well as life.
