Book a stay in the middle of downtown nature with today’s Groupon: a two-night stay with Hidden Creek Cabins in a one- or two-bedroom cabin for $100 (up to $300 value) or in a three- or four-bedroom cabin for $200 (up to $450 value). Just a three- to four-hour drive or 13-hour hot-air balloon flight from Charlotte, this Smoky Mountain retreat is a convenient destination for explorers of all levels. Whether you’re ready to trade your everyday scene for pleasantly rustic environs, or want to find a remote location to perfect your own race of atomic supermen, the cabins at Hidden Creek provide the perfect retreat.

Use your Groupon on one of Hidden Creek’s 18 cabins (technically there are 20, but one is a five bedroom, and the other is imaginary). There are cabins on the creek, such as the three-bedroom Farmhouse, and cabins with views, such as Pop’s Cabin, which (like many of the other cabins) features a backyard hot tub, perfect for unwinding after a day of hiking, or a solemn but tiny re-enactment of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. If you’re bringing the whole family or five hypnotized strangers who help you carry groceries, lodges such as the Chestnut Lodge are able to accommodate larger groups for X-Men-style adventures in a scenic setting.

More luxurious options, such as the Paradise Cabin, are—like the perfect strudel—beautiful outside and inside. Amenities aplenty can be found in each of the cabins, so check out Hidden Creek’s website to find which one is best for your travel party. Also, as with popular brunch spots and one last big heist, reservations are required. The cozy dwellings are pet friendly (there is an extra $50 fee), so you won’t need to leave your dear beast behind while you’re out catching cabin fever.

The beautifully maintained cabins are a reflection of the pristine landscape surrounding them. Your Groupon is only good three months from purchase, so there’s a good chance you’ll be heading into a winter wonderland. The average winter temperature for the area hovers right around the freezing mark, so don’t be surprised to meet some powdery snow and luminous ice. To stay hot on a cold night, fire up the hot tub or sit around an actual fire, or, as city slickers might know it, "angry light." During the day you can do some hiking, follow some animal tracks (just not too closely, unless you want to become a bearbride), and see what the world looks like beyond the barbarous confines of civilization.

Extra fees may be assessed for weekend stays. This offer is not good during the week of Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s Eve, so you’ll need to plan an alternate in-law escape plan.

Reviews

Yahoo! Travel users were happy cabin campers, giving Hidden Creek Cabins four stars; even unfavorable weather didn’t taint one reviewer’s experience:

  • My husband, daughter, son in law and I spent 4 days at the Alarka 2 cabin. It was a wonderful, relaxing time. The cabin was clean and very comfortable. Even though it rained for the better part of our visit, we had a great time at the cabin. – User, Yahoo! Travel
  • I just spent my 5th time in one of the Hidden Creek Cabins, and it was just as lovely as the first time. The cabins are very well located and kept nice year after year. The prompt and friendly service is an added value to an already great deal for a memorable trip. I highly recommend Hidden Creek Cabins to anyone planning a trip to the Smokey Mountain area. – Julie Ard., Yahoo! Travel
  • We've stayed with Hidden Creek Cabins twice this season and will be back again and again as we had friendly and attentive service and a great vacation experience. – Lewis, Yahoo! Travel

Big Saul, The Swamp-Stomper

As the startled campers fled barefoot and screaming into the night, Big Saul drooped, sniffling under his burlap mask. “Why won’t anyone be my friend?” thought Saul, as he cooed non-verbally. He returned the machete to his belt, still sticky and red from the fresh-baked strawberry torte he had just sliced to welcome his new visitors to the swampland.

Big Saul trudged back toward the shack where he whiled away his lonely days, baking for visitors who never stayed to take a bite. Did they hate him because of his allergy to sunlight, he wondered, scratching his burlap head-protector.

“No, that would be prejudiced,” he added with a self-mocking chuckle.

Suddenly, something rustled past his leg, disappearing into the ferns. Oh, how Saul cringed and quivered, so easily startled was he! Then the mysterious intruder peeked out a black, whiskered nose. Why, it was a friendly swamp badger! Saul gingerly extended an open palm and the badger cautiously approached, sniffing and eagerly licking the torte residue from Saul’s fingers. Saul warbled maternally. It looked like he had a friend in this swamp after all.
