Expert floral designers impart basics of working with live flowers & design principles in two-hour class sessions

Flowers are like teenagers, blooming gracefully into adulthood so they can brighten up otherwise lifeless cubicles. Witness the budding innocence of nature with today’s Groupon: for $19, you get a two-hour Introduction to Flower Arranging class at Houston School of Floral Design (a $39 value). Choose between the following dates:

  • A class held between February 7 and April 7
  • A class held between May 1 and July 14

Houston School of Floral Design’s instructors induct fledgling arrangers into the art of flower sculpting, covering topics from plant care and safety to the compositional principles governing the form. Two-hour introductory seminars equip attendees with both the materials and guidance to craft their own arrangement, which they may take home and display upon the mantle or use to distract bees and steal their honey. Class sizes never exceed 20 participants, ensuring personal input from the instructor on each individual’s vase.

At the end of class, watery vessels sprout a living arrangement of key flowers, colorful filler, and ambient greenery. Students become familiar with each of their ingredients by sight and can henceforth identify arrangement components in a florist’s shop or even in the wild when attempting to arrange a bouquet to appease an enraged grizzly bear. Per session, Houston School of Floral Design offers 17 Introduction to Flower Arranging classes, which are scheduled weekday mornings and evenings, and Saturday mornings and afternoons. Detailed class times are located on the school calendar.

About Houston School of Floral Design

Angela Henry, director of the Houston School of Floral Design, calls flowers "the physical manifestation of emotions." Within a spacious design studio, students learn to arrange flowery shoots and sprays to communicate these feelings. A cluster of azaleas symbolizes goodwill, while camellias convey affection. The classroom's individual design desks, prep and demonstration areas, and view of a nearby wooded ravine encourage creativity without the threat of tests or grades. Open for education year-round, the school rolls out new classes every month, covering subjects such as introductory floral design and special occasions, from weddings to bee birthdays.
