Before the invention of rivers, whitewater rafting consisted of strapping a raft to a bull, pushing it into a pond and tickling it with barbecue tongs until it bucked you off. Experience the exhilaration of river rafting with today's Groupon: for $49, you get an all-day rafting trip with Imperial River Company (up to a $99 value), located on the banks of the Deschutes River in Maupin. All trips depart at 9:30 a.m. Monday through Sunday. This trip is not valid Saturdays in July and August.
All necessary whitewater equipment is provided for the six-hour splash fest, including a raft that seats up to seven, personal flotation device, paddles, and an expert water-whisperer as a guide. After listening to a short safety speech, hit the aqueous road at one of Imperial's private put-ins, avoiding the gold panners and laundry wenches who crowd other portions of the riverbank.
The 18-mile river journey jounces through the Deschutes whitewater to Sandy Beach, where you and the raft will be picked up and portaged to Buck Hollow for the second leg of the trip. Experience surrounding wildlife and life atop rapids nicknamed "Wake-Up," "Surf City," and "Wreck Rapids." Taming Mother Nature's unruly water tresses builds up a strident appetite, so the trip will take out at Pine Tree and you will return to Imperial's private lawn for a lunch of grilled chicken, burgers, and more. After a short rest, there are five more miles of rapids ahead, including "Devil's Hole," most likely named after the empty space in your high school math teacher's torso.
Trips are subject to availability, so call ahead to schedule.
Reviews
Four Yelpers give Imperial River Company five stars, and TripAdvisors give four stars:
- I have done two guided full day river trips with them and each time it's been amazing and informative. The guides are always silly and willing to let you get out and float through a few of the rapids. – kate m., Yelp
- We did a sweet 13 mile half day trip that was just enough to justify doing nothing else but read, eat, swim and sleep the rest of the time. – Bob S., Yelp

About Imperial River Company
With Imperial River Company, active relaxation isn't an oxymoron. That's because the company lives by its motto: "Actively relaxing on the banks of the Deschutes River." It does this by harnessing the area's rolling hills and serpentine river for a wealth of outdoor getaways. Whitewater rafting acquaints guests with the Deschutes River's undulating waters during guided rafting trips that launch from a private dock and return to the same area for picnics and beach volleyball. Additionally, fishing expeditions help guests reel in wild redside trout and summer steelhead while taking in the postcard views of the locale, and cycling services rent out single and tandem bikes for calming jaunts along winding roads and around canyons.
