    Instructors certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation steer Rider's Edge students through 25 hours of motorcycle fundamentals such as braking, turning, and developing a tough exterior to disguise a surprisingly gentle core. Students familiarize themselves with the inner workings of a dealer-provided bike before hopping on one to practice maneuvering techniques, including controlling skids and maneuvering obstacles. Course graduates receive a MSF Basic Rider Course Completion Card and a DL389, which may exempt them from the riding portion of the California motorcycle-license class and may reduce insurance rates. Riders must provide their own riding apparel, including jackets, jeans, chaps, leather pants, over-the-ankle footwear, full-fingered gloves, eyewear, and a helmet that mets DOT requirements. Loaner helmets and gloves are available.
