Today’s deal gets you in on the world’s most ancient and under-utilized martial art, roller-skating. For $3, you get one admission and one skate rental to Kate’s Skating Rink (an up to $7 value). The rink is a short 20-minute drive from downtown Charlotte in Indian Trail (slightly longer if you skate there). Since your Groupon is not valid with other offers, consult Kate’s schedule to make sure that your chosen night doesn’t overlap with a planned event, like Shouting Day or Take Your Daughter To "Shouting Day" Day.
You can rent skates from Kate’s with your Groupon, or you can bring your own wheels. If you own a pair of inlines but feel nostalgic, feel free to rent an old-school pair of four-bangers instead. The rink rents out shoe sizes ranging from bootie to clodhopper, so both kids and adults are cleared for launch. Don’t be surprised if you start to uncontrollably gravitate towards the rink once you lace up, as these boots are made for skating. And that’s just what they’ll do—with or without your consent. If you need a short breather, Kate's offers energy-refilling snacks and multiple arcade games for more flat-footed entertainment.
Get two Groupons and ask that special someone out on a skate date, then impress him or her with your gnarly ability to do the chicken dance while cruising backward. If you come alone, you might have more fun choreographing funky musical numbers with random rollersby. In a fit of passion, you might even swear off walking and pogo-sticking forever and become a full-time wheeler.

Skaters on Insider Pages give Kate’s Skating Rink four stars:
- Kate's has been around for as long as I can remember and it still is one of the best places to just hang out for kids… It's a GREAT place to find yourself with rowdy, cabin fevered kids! – Daphne F.
- Kate's Skating Rink is a good old fashioned roller skating rink with a wooden floor. The kids have a blast here. I always fast safe dropping my kids off here for a few hours of skating on the weekend. – Kim P.
Beyond Couple’s Skate
Be it ice or roller, many skating rinks enforce brief periods of couples’ skate, the skating world’s equivalent to the adult swim, when the floor is cleared of daredevil roustabouts and is briefly the domain of the romantically entwined, skirting about the perimeter in perfect pairs as if they were conjoined eight-wheeled turtledoves. But many rinks want to offer niche skating opportunities to the non-coupled as well. What other subgroups are getting their moment in the skating spotlight?
Mummys’ skate: Usually ridiculed for their stiffness, mummies find that having the rink to themselves bolsters their confidence in a way usually only accomplished by having their servants build them a 146-meter-high pyramid in their honor and then using it as a tomb in which to bury those servants alive.
Wizards’ skate: Only here can wizards really let their beards down, effortlessly coasting and trading bro-nods in this neutral setting while privately plotting for dominance of the few mountaintops untouched by man.
Baby curling: While not technically a “skate,” stay-at-home dads let off steam with this new twist on the Winter Olympic favorite, using ice brooms to strategically maneuver insulated, weighted bassinets, shepherding their delighted babies down icy grooves to their first sense of victory.
