In the old days, movie tickets didn't cost an arm and a leg, and said limbs were only available from the angry, brooding Mannequin King of SoHo. Hearken back to sometime last Tuesday with today's deal: for $10, you get a pair of tickets to Kew Gardens Cinemas (up to a $20 value), a historic 1930s theater.

Kew Gardens Cinemas shows a wide range of current movies, such as Winter's Bone and the documentary Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, in a stylish setting that whippersnapper young theaters can only aspire to. Originally called the Austin, the vintage 1930s theater has seen several ups and downs in its history, from years as a second-run double-feature house to a red-tinted stint that got it shut down by the city. In its current incarnation, the Kew's art-deco origins have been restored and updated with modern projectors and molar-rocking surround sound, as well as stadium seating, rocking-chair seats, and a concession stand stocked with fresh coffee and cookies. For a vintage movie-viewing event in style, today's deal totally beats watching Betamax tapes on your Great Uncle Vinnie's 1978 Zenith.

This Groupon is not valid for 3-D showings.

Reviews

Yelpers and eight Yahoo! Local reviewers give Kew Gardens Cinemas an average of 4.5 stars:

  • My favorite theatre in Queens. I love to just show up knowing I'll find a movie that suits my eklectic [sic] taste. Recommend it to my Manhattan friends too-gives us a way to get together in a different, relaxed setting. – Deborah, Yahoo! Local
  • Though there are a limited number of screens, the films they show are well-picked, so you really can't go wrong. – Seth M., Yelp
