About Kids Art Classes at Zebra
In the 1970s and '80s, the Loisaida neighborhood struggled. Abandoned buildings and lots proliferated the area, sapping the culturally rich community of its character. Thankfully, grassroots activists stepped in and worked to restore the housing market by reclaiming blighted buildings and lots and turning them into homes and gardens.
Sixth Street Community Center grew from this neighborhood movement. Founded in 1978, the nonprofit commits itself to the betterment of its neighbors by providing education and services to residents, many of which are focused on healthful eating, sustainable agriculture, and organic and local food. In addition to its food-related work—which includes operating a community-supported-agriculture group and the Organic Soul Café—Sixth Street also runs yoga, tai chi, and dance classes, open-mic nights, art classes, film screenings, and other programs.
