From its home in Lunken Airport, Lunken Flight Training Center provides beginner and advanced flight instruction from an experienced, certified pilot. The Explorer Discovery flight lesson begins with a rundown of pre-flight procedures before students jump in the cockpit of a Cessna 172S to start the engine and taxi for takeoff. Instructors lead students through the fundamentals of engine run-up procedures and subduing a need for speed, and hand the controls over after takeoff. Students will then practice maintaining altitude; making steep turns; and practicing simple maneuvers such as climbs and descents before the instructor brings the plane in for a safe landing.

After completing the basic routine, instructors and students will take off again and go through the entire pattern a second time to make sure new fliers completely grasp the fundamentals. The entire lesson lasts about two hours, including a tour of the facility and an hour and 10 minutes spent in the aircraft (approximately 55–60 minutes of which will be up in the air). All new fliers must bring adequate proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a U.S. passport or a photo I.D. with a birth certificate.
