As a Freight Broker you will be required to have organizational & communication skills. Make sure you always maintain freight files and customer receipts for reference purposes. Being organized as a broker is a necessity. You will have to store information from both shippers and carriers and ensure all of the information is in order. Having easy access to your paperwork will decrease your workload.

What is a freight agent?

A freight agent is an independent contractor who works under the license of a freight broker. Freight agents get paid on a percentage scale under the freight broker. Usually under a 60/40 split. Most freight brokers will accept a freight agent who has their own book of business already established. Freight agents are responsible for sales and matching carriers with the shippers' needs. Thus, they have no liability but are able to earn a lucrative income under the freight broker's license. Freight agents also handle the motor carrier invoices and payments, customer (shipper) billing and assessments and cash flow. The freight agent is expected to be able to work independently from the freight broker.

What is a dispatcher?

The truck dispatcher keeps a "bird's eye" on shipments from the pickup point to its final destination. Freight dispatchers work for the carrier. They find the carriers' loads by communicating with shipper customers and freight brokers. They negotiate rates and are responsible for taking care of all of the carrier paperwork, invoices and book-keeping. The dispatcher's job is to keep the carrier truck moving. They ensure the carrier is picking up his/her loads on time and distributing the load safely. They're also responsible for tracking traffic, the weather & the route carriers will be on. Freight Dispatchers spend alot of time responding to emails & phone calls, maintaining driver logs, conveying repair and freight bills. The dispatcher is responsible for filling out carrier packets sent by freight brokers to complete on behalf of their signed-on carrier.

Every freight broker or property broker is connected with shippers and dispatch accommodations in the industry. Therefore, we are all connected to truck drivers (carriers). In this industry, businesses have to connect with other parties of a different designation to facilitate the movement of freight. Dispatchers are often not connected with shippers to the same extent of freight brokers.
