The diaries of Lewis and Clark are filled with cantankerous laments about having to tour the wilderness by foot and the startling lack of trailside fast-food options. Equip yourself with a discoverer's eyes and a Robocop's wheels with today's deal: for $30, you get a two-hour Segway tour of Tampa Bay from Magic Carpet Glide, a $65 value.
Every day at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 5:30 p.m., amorous adventurers flock to the Channelside Bay Plaza looking to be swept off their feet during a two-hour date with the city, responsibly chaperoned by a Segway. Segways are self-balancing transportation devices that comfortably carry sightseers over great swaths of urban terrain, no matter how sensible their socks and shoes are. Before your tour begins, a short training session will teach you all the tricks of the Segway trade. Once you are properly acquainted with your futuristic friend, one of Magic Carpet's experienced guides will lead you through the Tampa Bay area, zooming by St. Pete Times Forum and through the Tampa Riverwalk Project, which overlooks the Hillsborough River. You'll wind past the Gasparilla Pirate Ship and Harbour Island, taking in panoramic views of the landscape and historic architecture, and viewing the foot- and hand-work of local artists.
A tour with Magic Carpet Glide is an exciting way to spend an afternoon entertaining visiting friends or racing madly against visiting in-laws. It's also a way for locals to learn obscure facts about their city. Weekend tour dates fill up quickly, and groups are limited to two to six people, so advance reservations are recommended.
Segwayers must be at least 12 years old.
Reviews
TripAdvisors voted Magic Carpet Glide Segway Tours the number one attraction in Tampa, giving it a perfect five owl eyes. A reporter from St. Petersburg Times reviewed the tour, applauding founder Geoff Karlavage's brainchild:
- We thought we'd be there for maybe an hour, taking notes and pictures. Almost three hours later, Karlavage practically had to tear the Segways out of our hands. One thing about Segways: They're a lot more fun than they look. – Emily Nipps, St. Petersburg Times
- The segway tour of Tampa is one of the best kept secrets of Tampa. A very nice break from all the Amusement Park's. Loved it!!!! The equipment is easy to use, tour guide helpful & knowledgeable and the scenery AWESOME. Saw manta rays and lots of the bay. DON'T MISS IT! – katseyeFairbanks, TripAdvisor
- We had a fantastic time seeing the Tampa skyline, visiting Harbour and Davis islands and enjoying the relaxing tour! We saw wild parakeets, devil rays and a bald eagle on the trip and that really pleased the kids! The pace was smooth and the segways handled wonderfully. – nhanev, TripAdvisor
