Vintners help students crush, press, rack & bottle 12 bottles of wine made from Chilean grapes over course of nine months

Wine stored in a bottle gets better with age, whereas a message sent in a bottle is the best way to avoid exorbitant stamp prices. Empty your own glass envelopes with today’s Groupon: for $129, you get a winemaking class and a take-home case of your own wine at Make Wine With Us in Wallington (a $300 value).

The American Wine Society–certified wine judges at Make Wine With Us teach wine aficionados to create their own wines in varietals such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and malbec using grapes harvested in Chilean vineyards. At the start of the nine-month process, winemakers-to-be assemble with fellow enthusiasts to learn the intricacies of the trade. Patrons learn to crush and destem Chilean grapes in a machine called a crusher-destemmer, named after the device's favorite Germanic metal band. Following the crushing process, a hydraulic press forces juice into barrels, where it shall remain until the conclusion of its sweet, sweet metamorphosis.

When wine awakens from its hibernation, patrons remove suspended yeast cells and skin particles though a process called racking. At the end of the nine-month period, newly minted winemakers lean on family and friends to fill, cork, and label the finished product. Winemaking students then reap the fruits of their labor, hauling home a case of 12 bottles of handmade wine to pair with dinners or the neighbor's new white carpet.
