Man's desire to climb mountains is evidence of his envy of goats, who secretly wish they had hands so they could write long text messages describing sunsets. Scale to higher heights with today's Groupon: for $15, you get a beginning rock-climbing class and day pass at Mesa Rim Climbing and Fitness Center (a $30 value). As one of the West Coast's largest climbing facilities, Mesa Rim Climbing and Fitness offers lessons and practice space to altitude-cravers of all experience levels. With an introductory 25- to 45-minute belay lesson, novice climbers learn harness safety checks, knots, climbing commands, and mid-climb high-fives at the hands of an experienced staff member. Prior to their first simulated geological interlude, climbers must pass a belay test demonstrating proper retention of safety skills. Once certified, thrill seekers can maneuver up vertically apt walls dotted with candy-colored boulders that ensure optimal route visibility without collateral tooth decay. In addition to course instruction, Mesa Rim provides students with shoes, harnesses, chalk bags, and a belay device for a full day of rock-rollicking fun. Classes max out at six climbers per session, so participants are recommended to reserve a space in advance.
Reviews
Yelpers give Mesa Rim an average of 4.5 stars and say:
- At Mesa Rim, there are SO many routes, so many options at so many levels! Mesa Rim routes are fun, challenging, well diversified and have routes that a shorty like me can do, without sacrificing complexity or skill. – Shteen W.
- Every time I go I discover a new feature (for example -- free body wash and shampoo in the showers...convenient). To call it a climbing gym is almost a disservice, as it has most of the amenities of your typical gym, from workout machines to saunas and yoga. – Patrick S.
