Built in 1888, Malfate Manor was ominously dubbed "the house in the hollow" by neighborhood children privy to its eerie history and paranormal happenings. Several members of the Malfate family met untimely ends within the home's walls, and legend maintains that their spirits never left. Numerous businesses tried to establish themselves in the manor—including a hotel, a funeral parlor, and an asylum—but each fell into ruin after a series of malicious, unexplained phenomena, and the home was abandoned in the hollow during the 1960s.

Tours now explore those ghostly halls throughout the month of October, leading guests as young as 6 through the mansion's 17 rooms, underground cellar, and backyard cemetery. Instead of using chainsaws and gory violence to shock audiences, the tours rely on the house's naturally spooky ambience to help create a spine-tingling journey through cobweb-lined corridors and secret passages that lead to printouts of the house's subprime-mortgage agreement. Virtually every room includes an exit, allowing guests to leave the tour if they become too frightened.

Afterwards, brave guests can march through the Field of Fright's dark cornfield path to discover what is lurking between the menacing stalks. Along the way, they will see live entertainment surrounding bonfires. Refreshments and other Halloween-themed activities will also be available.

The Haunted House and the Field of Fright are open from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends until November 2.
