Real treasures touched by real pirates. Those are the wonders visitors see as they enter the Real Pirates Exhibition: The Untold Story of the Whydah. The touring exhibition—organized by National Geographic and Premier Exhibitions, Inc.—fills Moody Gardens’ Discovery Museum with more than 150 authentic artifacts, all recovered from the 18th-century pirate ship the Whydah (pronounced like “widow”, but with an “ah” sound at the end).
Though originally designed for the slave trade, the Whydah only made one trip to the Caribbean before its capture by the pirate “Black Sam” Bellamy in 1717. His crew prowled the ocean in the three-masted ship for just a few months when a strong storm sunk them off the coast of Cape Cod—killing all but two people. And that’s where the ship waited until 1984, when its discovery marked the Whydah as the world’s first authenticated pirate shipwreck. Its current home inside the Discovery Museum lets visitors take a glimpse at the gold riches Bellamy was after, as well as the ship’s impressive cannons and preserved pieces of pirate garb.
