At Moody Gardens’ Festival of Lights, the area around its outdoor skating rink suddenly blooms with the twinkling of more than one million tiny bulbs. As 100 sound-equipped light installations flash and flicker, live entertainment creates its own soundtrack. Meanwhile, guests can take pictures with Santa or wander into one of three theaters to catch holiday films until the Gardens close at 10 p.m.

The Aquarium Pyramid also opens its gates to holiday revelers, enlightening visitors with up-close-and-personal peeks at more than 10,000 marine animals from the Caribbean, North Pacific, South Pacific, and South Atlantic. Around 1.5 million gallons of water fill the aquarium’s four exhibits, where guests can identify five species of penguins, gape at sweeping coral reefs, and exchange salutations with Squirt, the blind sea lion. At The Caribbean, the aquarium’s largest exhibit, visitors can lock eyes with sharks and sea turtles and walk through an underwater tunnel occupied by thousands of kaleidoscopic tropical fish.
