Mosquitoes have been around for more than 30 million years, which is coincidentally the half-life of Twinkies—the mosquito’s favorite sweet treat. Rid yards of cake-eating insects with today's Groupon: for $49, you get a QuickNix three-step mosquito treatment on 1/3 of an acre from MosquitoNix (a $149 value). See the sidebar for service area.

MosquitoNix's QuickNix treatment frees backyards from biting bugs in three steps. First, a backpack-mounted mosquito fogger flushes adult mosquitoes out of ivy, hedges, and other dense foliage, penetrating more deeply than other delivery methods, including pump sprayers and pizza delivery boys. Next, nimble technicians sprinkle lawns with granules of all-natural repellent, concentrating in areas where the homeowner spends a lot of time, such as patios, swing sets, and outdoor offices perched atop swing sets.

Finally, a larvicide—Bti—is dropped into standing water in which the insects breed, depopulating next year's roster of mosquitoes without harming people or other species. Though today's Groupon is for a one-off insect eviction, best results are achieved when QuickNix treatments are repeated monthly, not just once in a while, sometimes, or hardly ever.

About MosquitoNix

Vibrant perennial flowers known for their sunny blossoms, chrysanthemums often find work decorating a home or jazzing up a garden. However, beneath their bright exteriors lurks a dark secret: the flowers are stone-cold mosquito killers. These horticultural hit men often partner with the pest-control professionals at MosquitoNix, who transform the plants into a plant-based pest assassin that is safe around pets, kids, and other foliage.

Since their founding in 2003—the same year the Mosquito-Human Armistice of 1983 expired—MosquitoNix has been helping families reclaim their backyards. The company's licensed specialists treat commercial and residential sites, where they address mosquito problems depending on the needs of each location. MosquitoNix offers a one-time fogging QuickNix, for instance, in preparation for upcoming outdoor parties. They also install fully automated permanent misting systems, which sprays daily to repel not only mosquitos, but also other annoyances such as flies, fleas, and spiders selling magazine subscriptions.
