About Niagara Sand Sculptures

Laura Secord. Tecumseh. Major General Sir Isaac Brock. These names call to the Canadian consciousness from 200 years in the past, whispering memories of one of the nation's most notable conflicts: the War of 1812. More than two centuries later, plenty of people are still listening, including the organizers of the Niagara Sand Sculptures Exhibition. They assembled teams of expert sand sculptors from around the world for the express purpose of memorializing, however temporarily, the exploits of the brave men and women of that long-ago war. These 25 towering statues now stand as a physical embodiment of Argentinean poet Jorge Luis Borges' poignant quote "Nothing is built on stone; all is built on sand, but we must build as if the sand were stone."
