Osteopathy: Preventative Manipulation
Osteopathy is one of the tools that Oakville Massage & Wellness Clinic's therapists use to relieve pain and correct imbalances. Check out Groupon’s guide to osteopathy to learn about this holistic approach to healthcare.
The spine holds our bodies together in a few obvious ways—keeping us standing straight; relaying signals between our brains, nerves, and muscles through the spinal cord. To doctors of osteopathy, it’s also the connection to health throughout the entire body. Founded in 1874 by Missouri physician Andrew Taylor Still, the practice of osteopathy works on the theory that diseases are due largely to abnormalities in the musculoskeletal system. The philosophy asserts that a problem in the spine will send abnormal signals and talk-radio static to the body’s organs and muscle tissue through the long nerve fibers that connect them. Therefore, osteopaths believe that everything from lower back pain to fibromyalgia, asthma, and irritable bowel syndrome can be treated by working directly on the musculoskeletal system.
Today, primary-care physicians generally fall into two camps: medical doctors and doctors of osteopathy. Both are fully qualified physicians who complete four years of basic medical education, and osteopathic physicians can specialize in anything from family medicine and pediatrics to emergency medicine and psychiatry. The difference lies in the fact that osteopathic physicians regularly combine conventional medical techniques with hands-on manipulations of the back, legs, or arms. Their checkups focus on posture, joint movement, and tension in the muscles and ligaments, using a holistic approach that favors prevention over surgery, medication, or voodoo.
Osteopathic manipulations are similar to chiropractic manipulations. Chiropractors, though, generally focus on the spine, whereas osteopathic practitioners work with the entire musculoskeletal system. Common manipulative techniques include myofascial release and high velocity, low amplitude (HVLA) technique. Myofascial release works to loosen and release the connective tissues around the muscles, whereas HVLA increases a person’s range of motion through placing brief, rapid force on tight joints.
