Like your uncle's Fourth of July celebration, a good luau starts with plenty of eats and entertainment before the host sets something on fire. Capture the feeling of familial warmth with today’s Groupon: for $20 you get one adult admission with buffet fare to the Ohana Luau Dinner Show at the Hawaiian Inn (a $42 value).

The Ohana Luau Dinner Show celebrates the music, dance, and cuisine of the Pacific Islands with a family-friendly, interactive supper spectacle. Hawaiian dancers twirl in a frenzy of swishing grass skirts, inviting guests to join them onstage, and Maori women spin glowing poi balls, an ancestral form of storytelling. Diners can marvel as warriors deftly spin fire-knives and briefly ignite their hands and tongues, demonstrating the ancient strategy used to ensure warm handshakes and prevent brain freeze. Live Polynesian percussion pulses throughout the show, compelling hands and hips to hula.

Seating begins an hour before the show, providing time to mingle with other lei-wearers in a tropical setting, detailed with palm-frond tablecloths, seashell-encrusted lights, and hand-painted volcanoes erupting on the walls. While discussing sandcastle-construction strategies and the best sunscreen designs to secretly apply to companions' backs, guests can nibble on authentic eats from the Polynesian buffet, a feast of teriyaki chicken, Hawaiian kalua pulled pork, Hawaiian steak, and more, all freshly prepared by Samoan chef Steve George. During the show, servers dish out orange cream cake to bring the banquet to a sweet finish.

About Ohana Luau

During My Ohana Luau’s interactive dinner show, dancers call patrons of all ages onstage to learn Polynesian dance moves and befriend hula girls, creating a song-and-dance spectacle flanked by an authentic island-style buffet. Before the show, visitors dine on a buffet of delicacies such as pineapple chicken and pulled pork with sweet-and-sour sauce, prepared fresh daily by a Samoan chef. A flaming fire knife dance serves as the performance's triumphant conclusion, wherein performers hailing from diverse Polynesian regions gambol in elaborate headdresses and traditional island garb. Parties celebrating birthdays and anniversaries relay their excitement to the house emcee, who announces landmark occasions to the crowd.

The eatery’s full bar further enlivens shows with cocktails such as the Flaming Volcano for two, a mixture of three types of rum with orange and pineapple juice that burns brighter than a bonfire fueled by SAT-prep books. For less formal fare, the onsite café serves simple omelet breakfasts, and the pool-deck menu centers on sandwiches.
