With history being dubbed as "yesterday's events" by many cigar-chomping media types, museums prove that history is, in fact, "tomorrow's yesterdays." Join in the historical hullabaloo with today's Groupon: for $9, you get two tickets to the Oregon History Museum at the Oregon Historical Society, up to a $22 value for adults. Admission rates vary by age—adults are normally $11, students over 18 are $9, and children 6–18 are $5. The museum is open six days a week and is closed Mondays.

Founded in 1898, a year remembered by fashion historians as "the year of President McKinley Eyebrows," the Oregon Historical Society has sought to preserve and promote the history, politics, and culture of the nation's 33rd state through publications, lectures, and the exhibits at the Oregon History Museum. Befriend the past with the Oregon My Oregon exhibit, an award-winning and interactive look at the state's odyssey. It features 7,000 square feet of more than 50 displays showcasing numerous artifacts and antiques, including a 9,000-year-old sagebrush sandal. Beat the Independence Day rush with a visit to the exhibit Tall in the Saddle: 100 Years of the Pendleton Round-Up, running through July 4. The exhibit celebrates a century of the iconic bronco-busting rodeo event with video clips, authentic Round-up gear, and timeless photography. Also appearing at the Oregon History Museum is Becoming American: Teenagers & Immigration, a Smithsonian traveling exhibit with photos chronicling the experiences of first-generation immigrants and their children and how they have adjusted to the land of apple pie and processed-cheese singles. The exhibit runs through May 30.

This Groupon also grants guests admission to the Oregon Historical Society's extensive research library of old photos and records, ideal for amateur sleuths looking to solve that triple mosquito homicide from 1903. The library is open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The value of your Groupon can also be used toward the purchase of a membership ($60+) to the Oregon Historical Society. Pack up your flux-capacitor-equipped Conestoga and hit the trail back to the past at the Oregon History Museum.

Reviews

Frommer's calls the Oregon Historical Society a must-go destination for history buffs, five Yelpers give it 4.5 stars, and four in-the-know locals at Go See Oregon give it four stars:

  • If you'd like to learn about the people who discovered Oregon before you, visit this well-designed museum. Fascinating exhibits chronicle Oregon's history from before the arrival of the first Europeans to well into the 20th century. – Frommer's
  • Unique amongst most museums is section 6 - "Oregon Culture" because here not only the positively settled issues of the state are presented but also the current political topics and controversies. Take at least 1,5 [sic] hours for this great museum. – lisboa, Go See Oregon
  • This is a great Museum and Library to learn more about the place that you live. – Brandy S., Yelp
