About Orono Public Golf Course
In several ways, the history of Orono Public Golf Course mirrors the history of golf course design in America. It was built in 1924, at the height of the course construction boom that lasted throughout the '20s, on land that had once been home to acres and acres of apple orchards. In those days, most courses were built with sand putting surfaces because it was cheaper and easier, but this nine-hole course bore grass greens, a now-ubiquitous feature of golf course design. For thirty-five cents, golfers got to tee up and face down the course's treacherous topography, which included elevated greens and lots of trees. Today, rounds cost a bit more, but players are still getting their licks and kicks with the course almost a century later.
