Purge your fear of oversized rodents by embracing them in a controlled musical environment, and get into the holiday spirit in the process. Today’s Groupon scores you orchestra seats to Nutcracker at Pacific Northwest Ballet for $43 (a $84 value). With shows December 15 through December 18, you can choose a date that doesn’t conflict with your death-metal album-cover calligraphy classes.

PNB’s production of Nutcracker has been a premier rendition of the famous story since its debut in December of 1983. Artistic director Kent Stowell and famed artistic storyteller Maurice Sendak (Where The Wild Things Are) have crafted a glorious visual rendering of Tchaikovsky’s musical arrangements and an unforgettable performance experience. A child’s imagination explodes into life on stage as the harmony of music, dance, and colorful set decorations reminds us why Nutcracker is as hallowed a holiday tradition as stalking Santa Claus.

Your shoes have been dying to witness some dancey footwork, so feed their soles with a holiday treat of epic adventure and sublime music. Share the famous story with the whole family, from older generations seeking nostalgia to younger ones looking to save up nostalgia for later.

Reviews

The Seattle Times reviews PNB’s production of Nutcracker with such luminous phrases as: > * Though those giant Nutcracker teeth and that swelling Christmas tree have seen much service since the ballet’s 1983 debut, the production’s still a beauty — and still has magic to spare. – Moira Macdonald

The Gathering Note writes: > * What keeps the allure of the ballet fresh year after year is the meticulous care in maintaining Sendak’s wondrous design — costumes and sets. – R.M. Campbell

Ballet Reviews for Manly Men

Ballet is a graceful, formal style of dance requiring natural skill and years of study, but it is often seen as a feminine endeavor too girly for a man to enjoy. To overcome this stigma, Fred Kyles of Tempe, Arizona, has started Man-llet.com, an online ballet review site geared toward men. Here are some of his reviews:

Nutcracker: “Hell yea! Trust me, bros, the babes are hot and the beers I snuck in were cold. Also, lead dancer Eloise Michelle’s arabesque penchee was astonishing. This show is so ballsy I grew a beard while watching it.”

Swan Lake: “This ballet friggin’ rocks! I had my mind blown when I realized that the famous Black Swan Pas de deux is musically an Andante, even though the choreography is Adagio. After the show, I played truck basketball.”

La Bayadere: “This show is BYON—bring your own nachos—and believe me, I did. This was a restaging of Kirov’s famous 1941 production. I had to buy a new TV after the show ‘cause, that afternoon, I shot my flat-screen since the baby elk on the hunting show I was watching was too realistic.”
