About Paper Moon Vineyards

The Cawrses first opened a family business in 1946. It was a creamery, and became a thriving one, but over the years the family would tweak their focus and move cities. Two generations after the creamery first opened in Lorain, it had become a family-run winery in Amherst. Below, four highlights of that winery, Paper Moon Vineyards.

It's a way to get back to nature: The winery sits on 50 lush acres, planted with thousands of vines for all manner of grapes: vidal blanc, noiret, and chambourcin, to name a few.

The wines have a subtle nautical theme: Think "Sailor's Red" and "Message in a Bottle" (two dry reds) as well as "Lighthouse Cayuga White." It's perhaps inspired by Lake Erie, whose waters sparkle a stone's throw from the winery.

The tasting room is chic. The tables are, fittingly, made from oak barrels. Copper and stucco accents abound too, adding interest to the room in a subtler way than a mascot in a grape costume would.

You can sip your wine with food. The tasting room serves Italian-inspired dishes such as paninis, pizza, and ciabatta bread. They also serve cheese plates—what is wine without cheese?
