E-bike: this style of bike requires no pedaling at all (though you’re welcome to do so if you want to show off). To activate the battery, you’ll use a throttle mounted on the handlebars.
Pedelec: the other main style of electric bicycle. On this kind of bike, you will have to pedal to engage the motor, but not very hard. A sensor resides in the bottom bracket that tells the motor when you’re pedaling—and, often, how fast—so it can assist you accordingly.
