The Paramount Theatre celebrates its 80th year by thrilling audiences with a series of four shows plucked from the golden age of Broadway. My Fair Lady (September 14–October 2) jumpstarts the run with its adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s 1912 novel Pygmalion, the frown-pummeling yarn of an upper-crust linguistics professor who attempts to transform a Cockney-accented flower peddler into a refined society woman. Although some theatergoers scoff at the play's twist ending, where protagonist Eliza Doolittle uses her new accent to launch a voice-activated robot army, My Fair Lady remains a joyful period piece with head-bobbing songs such as “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?” and “I Could Have Danced All Night.” Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award–nominated Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (November 2–20) jazzes up the Biblical tale of Joseph and his jealous sepia-jacketed brothers while a vivacious cast dances its way through a fast-paced score of rock 'n' roll, disco, and reggae melodies.
A Chorus Line (January 18–February 5, 2012), one of America's most-performed musicals, follows 17 dancers at an audition and tickles cochleae with a score of timeless ditties such as “What I Did For Love” and “One” to create a dynamic piece of stagecraft. The series ends with Hair (March 14–April 1, 2012), the psychedelic Tony Award–winning musical that grapples with complex themes such as war, drug culture, racism, and how to solve a Rubix Cube. Rock 'n' roll hits such as “Aquarius” and “Good Morning Starshine” highlight the rollicking score. Paramount Theatre recommends parental discretion for Hair, as it includes a brief, dimly lit nude scene and an extended monologue about the deliciousness of broccoli.
Although the Paramount Theatre sometimes features a discounted price online, this Groupon still offers the best deal available.
