Before racing, checkered flags were used only as symbols of surrender following skirmishes between chess clubs. Celebrate triumphant textiles with today's Groupon: for $25, you get $50 worth of track sessions, license, and head sock at Pat's Acres Racing Complex in Canby.
Pat's Acres Racing Complex pushes adrenaline glands into overdrive with Honda-powered, competitive racing karts that can reach speeds of up to 50 mph. The track, which features a more than 200-yard straightaway, has hosted several professional racing championships, and currently serves as a fixture on the national Skusa Promoto Tour. Racers will be equipped with helmets, gloves, neck collars, and racing jackets before firing up their ground-hugging chariots for 14-minute racing sessions ($25) and proving that Maslow's hierarchy of needs is incomplete without speed. After each race, guests will be presented with a sheet displaying the lap times of each racer alongside their ideal corporate sponsor, such as Jiffy Lube or Doc Patterson's House of Lethargic Turtles.
Drivers are required to have an annual license ($12), as well as a head sock ($3, or bring your own) to keep helmets clean for future visitors. Between track sessions, racers can check out the historic 43-acre concourse, which, prior to becoming an expansive go-kart range, served as an outdoor venue for bands such as The Mamas & the Papas, and helped to usher in the early days of motocross racing.

About Pat's Acres Racing Complex
Even though it was founded in the 1950s, the 43-acre Pat's Acres Racing Complex is still a crowd pleaser. Originally designed as a motorcycle racing course, the grounds were later re-built as a go-kart track. Thanks to the allure of its tree-shaded straightaways and tight, tire-squealing turns, the track has since hosted a slew of national championship kart races, including Superkarts! USA's National SKUSA ProMoto Tour. The track also sees pulse-pounding action on a normal day: drivers as young as 14 take spins in a fleet of rentals, which include Sodikart GT 5s. Each cart is equipped with a Honda 9-HP motor, which allows it 1.5 lateral Gs when cutting through tight corners, and the ability to reach speeds up to 60 mph when outrunning a flaming 18-wheeler. Pat's Acres Racing Complex also helps visitors improve their technique with lessons in track etiquette and kart maneuvers that include ample time on the track. Meanwhile, a full on-site paintball facility poses a different, colorful challenge to individuals and teams.
