There are a few sure signs of autumn in the town of Petersburg. Some are familiar, of course: the leaves blaze with crisp color, and the sound of football drills echo from local practice fields. However, others have a more spirited origin. The Festival of Grapes & Hops welcomes fall to downtown Petersburg with craft beer and wines from local and regional producers. During the one-day festival, guests can sip the latest ales and lagers from Virginia's vibrant microbrewing community or sample award-winning varietals from notable wine producers.

Although the festival is dedicated to these spirited drinks, it also features plenty of activities for kids and families. Artisans and craftsmen will host a bustling market, hawking everything from handmade jewelry and pottery to clothing, antiques, and works of art. They'll be joined by food vendors from around the city, who dole out eats including shish kebabs, burgers, and sugar-kissed elephant ears. All of this hullabaloo will be soundtracked by a full slate of live bands, whose musical repertoire is calibrated to keep the party lively and fun.
