When the Good King Henry turns back the clock at the start of the Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival, he transports patrons to a 16th century that looks a little different than history might say. First, the festival evokes the 16th century of Europe more than the 16th century of Pittsburgh. And second, there are fairies fluttering about. But these fantastical elements don't draw ire from history buffs—in fact, they incite straight-up delight. That's because they add up to one thing: spectacle. • Jugglers and maidens and minstrels, oh my: The first thing you'll probably notice is the sheer number of costumed entertainers wandering through the grounds and interacting with visitors. Expect kings, peasants, and even fire-breathers.
• A feast fit for royalty: Clear your plate for turkey legs, steaks on a stake, and king's sausage, as well as some time-bending menu items such as pizza and a cup full of mini cookies.
• A real-life knight's tale: A Renaissance fest just wouldn't be complete without jousting. During three daily competitions, noble knights and their brave horses will crash into each other before exchanging insurance information.
• Handmade wares: More than 100 vendors will be on hand to sell clothing, costumes, weapons, pottery, and even shoes. Plus crowds can see live demos of blacksmithing and glassblowing.
