Treat the sprain you sustained in a sweaty jai alai match with today's Groupon. For $40, you'll get one 60-minute session of consultation and acupuncture at Point Del Mar Acupuncture, normally a $120 package. For pain-ridden acu-newbies, this is a perfect introduction to an alternative form of medicine that the World Health Organization has deemed effective in treating a laundry list of injuries and ailments, including sports injuries, gastro-intestinal disorders, asthma, depression, coulrophobia, and even addiction.
Start with a sit-down consultation with Dr. Valerie Beckwith, who has spent seven years mastering traditional Chinese medicine in top schools, both here and in China. She also apprenticed under acclaimed acupuncturist master Dr. Ninghan Feng. She has treated everyone from athletes to infertile couples to recent escapees from the Matrix.
Dr. Beckwith and her staff of trusted associates will listen to your needs and review your lifestyle, so be prepared to answer questions on diet, stress levels, energy, digestion, exercise, medical history, family history, and likelihood of owning an owl.
Once Dr. Beckwith has determined the most effective treatments, be it only acupuncture or acupuncture coupled with electro-stimulation acupuncture, cupping, moxibustion, or a prescription of herbal medicine, the session will begin. Dr. Beckwith will walk you through your body's network of meridians as she pinpoints the spots where your vital energy, or qi, is being obstructed. After 20 to 30 minutes, you'll leave feeling like you just woke up from a nice post-Thanksgiving-dinner nap in an imaginary universe where you are allowed to nap after Thanksgiving dinner.
The treatments are so relaxing that some acupunctured have even tried to extend their treatment beyond the customary 8–12 recommended sessions by making up maladies such as "sullen teenage bowel syndrome," "phantom fingers," and "hypertension."
Reviews
Though Point Del Mar is fairly new, it has already gotten five stars from three fans on Yelp in addition to what its patients have to say:
- I've had many acupuncture sessins and I've never had such a thorough treatment session with explanation of the various meridians that she was focusing on, she talked to me about my pulse, my lifestyle habits, recommended all natural supplements... just very thorough!!! – Mike D.
Reno Raines: Renegade Acupuncturist
The stunning popularity of acupuncture in modern America can be traced to a seminal cultural phenomenon: the hit 90s TV series Renegade. The first of many shows to bring the Eastern art of healing with needles into the mainstream, the series’s haunting intro continues to inspire idealistic young acupuncturists:
- Reno Raines. He was an acupuncturist, and good at his job. But he committed the ultimate sin, and testified against other acupuncturists gone bad, acupuncturists who tried to kill him, but got the woman he loved instead. Framed for murder, now he prowls the badlands. An outlaw performing acupuncture, a rogue acupuncturist, a Renegade.
Independently wealthy, Raines accepted only kindness and handwritten letters of thanks in exchange for his services. Riding alone on his motorcycle, Diana, Raines stopped in his rambles just long enough to thwart local corruption, do some acupuncture, and capture the heart of any woman foolish enough to fall for him. A movie featuring Reno Raines, rogue acupuncturist, is set to be released soon, tentatively titled The Acupuncturist Who Travels Around and Gets Into Adventures.

About Point Del Mar Acupuncture
Point Del Mar Acupuncture founder and owner Valerie Beckwith graduated with a master’s degree in acupuncture and oriental medicine, but she didn't stop there. Since then, she's performed extensive clinical research, studied at a university in Hangzhou, China, and apprenticed under a master acupuncturist. Each day she brings this experience to her practice, a clinic where she's teamed up with Dwayne Lee, a health practitioner who is also board certified in both acupuncture and Chinese herbology. Both are adept at treating a bevy of different conditions, having had success in the past reducing general pain, dealing with respiratory disorders, and helping their clients overcome addictions. In order to maintain the highest of sanitation standards, Point Del Mar uses only stainless-steel needles that are used only one time before being thrown away—like the motorcycles of rich men.
