Shortly after man invented the wheel, he fastened four of them to a board and spent the rest of the Cenozoic era grinding wooly mammoth tusks. Reap the benefits of our ancestors' advancements with today's Groupon: for $20, you get $40 worth of skate gear, clothing, and accessories at Push Skateshop on Patton Avenue.
Push Skateshop, which TransWorld Skateboarding recognized as "Shop of the Month" in December 2007, fuses a full-service skateshop with a contemporary art gallery. It adorns its walls with belly-up decks ($35–$60), some of which are the shop’s own line and all of which are painted with museum-worthy motifs. Riders who select a deck can affix trucks ($45–$65), bearings ($11–$55), wheels (most are $30–$35), and sidecars for squirrels. Lest skaters lack the proper fashion for freestyling, Push Skateshop flatters feet with more than 75 kinds of shoes and protects men's and women's bodies with stylish asphalt armor from more than 50 brand-names, including Zero, Krooked, Planet Earth, Volcom, RVCA, Matix, and Emerica.
Along with decorated decks, Push displays a gallery of local artists' paintings, drawings, and Mad Libs. It hosts exhibit-opening receptions on select Friday nights.
