The first European explorers set sail with hopes of finding new, exotic spices to placate the palates of epicurious monarchs, but all they found were heaps of boring, inedible gold. Pick up where they left off by broadening your mouth's horizons with today's Groupon to R. A. Longs Sawmill Restaurant, located in Lee's Summit. Within the original Longview Farm (of lumber baron R.A. Long), Longs Sawmill Restaurant offers a menu of American fare infused with locally sourced meat and produce. Quiet a grumbly tummy with the black and bleu burger ($9), lemon salmon ($13), or the grilled bruschetta ($5.50) while you gaze at relics of lumber history. The dining room has walls of 100-year-old, cypress tongue-and-groove wood and uses six stable doors that housed champion horses and furtive marmocoons owned by Loula Long. The chef has carved his own bit of fame into the restaurant's rich history; he's prepared a meal for the last eight U.S. Presidents, and will happily create a comparable culinary experience for citizens who have not been leader of the free world.

- I had ordered Adel's German-style meatloaf, even though I'm wary of meatloaf in most restaurants — it's typically too dry and flavorless. Adel's was made with garlic and thyme, and it was the high point of the meal, wonderfully juicy, dripping with an exceptional burgundy mushroom reduction and generously seasoned with garlic. – Charles Ferruza, The Pitch
- And I got the basil pesto pasta with a salmon filet. The flavors were great together, with fresh herbs and capers all surrounded in a touch of cream with perfectly cooked salmon. Yum! – Taylor S., Yelp
