A shocking 100% of car accidents, squirrel attacks, and accidental viewings of Waterworld occur when the victims are on dry land. Enjoy a brief respite from these threats with today’s Groupon: for $15, you get a three- to four-hour whale-watching cruise from Ranger 85 Sportfishing in Oxnard (up to a $30 value).
For more than 30 years, Captain Frank Ursitti has shipped thousands of freshly minted mariners out for close-up views of the briny deep on his 85-foot wildlife observation vessel, Ranger 85, one of Ventura County's largest whale-watching ships. Piloting passengers through the azure waters of Channel Islands National Park and Marine Sanctuary, Captain Frank and his crew of narrating nautical naturalists keep a sharp eye on the horizon, ready to divine from a stray ripple or seagull’s expression the presence of nearby leviathans. Intrepid explorers can hope to see majestic gray and humpback whales, as well as smaller pilot whales, dolphins, and killer whales, made infamous for their bloodthirsty Scrabble tactics. While spy-hopping after these elusive creatures, passengers can also pause along the way and examine groups of seals, sea lions, and flocks of sea birds.
From now until April 11, whale-watching tours depart at 11 a.m. on weekdays and at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on weekends. Ranger 85 launches from the Channel Island Sportfishing Center, and is capable of holding 80 passengers or 6,000 cheese sandwiches.
Ranger 85 offers a two for one discount on Tuesdays that's not available when used with this Groupon.
