Dr. Levi Mengel founded the Reading Public Museum in 1904 to cement book-borne knowledge with hands-on learning. Today, the educational hub houses an extensive permanent collection of art, historic and scientific artifacts, ever-changing exhibitions, a planetarium, and an arboretum. Art enthusiasts swoon at the museum's mélange of masterpieces, such as etchings by Matisse and Picasso, and a lithograph by Renoir. The artifactual vault harbors petrified proof of earth's natural history, biological bits of science, and insight into humanity’s collective civilization.

Flanking the historical heart of the Reading Public Museum are arms that house a planetarium and arboretum. Celestial zealots and homesick cyborgs stargaze beneath technologically spangled skies during public star shows in the planetarium (free for members). Music shows also possess crowd-stunning capabilities, such as Friday-night showings of “Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon ” ($5 for members). Guests can return to lush earthen landscapes with a contemplative stroll through the creek-crossed arboretum, lined with more than 65 types of leafy specimens, footpaths, and benches.

  • It's a little bit art museum, a little bit Franklin Institute, a little bit country, and a little bit rock and roll. They also have a beautiful garden with paths and benches and a little creek running through it which is a great place to go and relax in the summertime. – Jeff H., Yelp, 6/3/08
