The Science Museum of Virginia fills each visitor's day with educational interactive exhibits, high-tech displays, IMAX movies, planetarium shows, and more. This summer's visiting exhibits include Beach Science, a hands-on exploration of beach ecosystems with a sand dune and buried treasures waiting to be excavated, as well as a boardwalk with a history of swimsuits display. Pair Beach Science with the Ultimate Wave Tahiti IMAX film featuring surf champion Kelly Slater, which explores the unique surfer culture in the French Polynesian islands and the forces that shape the area's marine life. Other visiting exhibits include an interactive map exhibit and an up-close and dynamic view of Saturn.

Permanent exhibits at the Science Museum range from the interactive electricity of Electriworks to the teen-friendly SCVNGR hunt, which sends clues, riddles, trivia, and museum-location challenges straight to their omnipresent phones. Planetarium shows launch brains into the depths of the universe daily, while the immense granite kugels, which allow mortals to move 29 tons of solid granite, have boosted entries into strongman competitions nationwide.

About Science Museum of Virginia

One of the Science Museum of Virginia’s current exhibits includes a few basketball players—just don’t expect LeBron James or Kobe Bryant. These basketball players are two rats, playing a live one-on-one game to demonstrate operant and classical conditioning. Throughout the three-story museum, more hands-on examples of science await at five permanent exhibits. Inspect a rock from the moon, explore a life-size space capsule, and generate energy by pedaling a stationary bike. Kids can even build their own playground with materials such as mats and foam blocks.

Inside the IMAX Dome, a screen 10 times the size of a typical 35 mm screen shows a wide range of educational films. Outside the museum, plants in the BayScapes Garden thrive without pesticide, fertilizer, or the encouragement of a motivational speaker, and an onsite greenhouse offers free planting areas for visitors to contribute greenery and learn about sustainable farming.
