Our headmaster, DeRu Shi, is a lifetime learner, cosmic consciousness explorer, and seasoned public speaker. He is among the 31st generation of disciples under the Shaolin Temple Grand Master SuXi. He was one of the first Chinese martial artists to transmit Zen Consciousness in action to the United States, and has spoken on Zen Consciousness, natural healing, and Kungfu worldwide.

Master Deru is the founder of Shaolin Institute, along with the Shaolin Chan Foundation, the Shaolin Institute's associated non-profit organization. He is one of the earliest Shaolin disciples to have entered the U.S., spreading Chan-Kungfu and Sanshou to such an expansive degree that led him to being dubbed “The American Godfather of Sanshou” around the world.

For more than 40 years, Master Deru has been advocating daily conscious meditative action to heighten and expand human consciousness. He has delivered thousands of speeches and presentations in the U.S., Europe, South America, China, and elsewhere around the world to schools, police academies, and U.S. military bases. Additionally, he has given innumerable presentations, lectures, and speeches to such medical and university institutions as Harvard University, Beijing University, Georgia Tech University, Tulane University, and University of California, Berkeley. He has served thousands of patients with desperate health issues, ushering them into complete healthy living.
