Silver Creek Materials
After cans of soda and bottles of beer pass their expiration date, they don’t go to the landfill. Thanks to the crew at Silver Creek Materials, the liquids inside are instead used to prepare nutrient-rich compost, which will nourish and sustain local gardens, lawns, and flowerbeds. Leaving nothing to waste, the crew recycles all the glass, metal, and plastic packaging. <p>
Though making compost is only a small part of Silver Creek Materials’ business, the aversion to waste and commitment to the environment reflects the company’s focus on eco-friendly operations. When mining sands and soils, the staff works carefully to prevent adverse effects on the land or water, winning a Texas Environmental Excellence Award in 1997. The company also recycles organic materials such as trees, grass clippings, and fussy children’s bread crusts.
