Thermage: A One-Time-Use Fountain of Youth
Thermage’s radio-frequency pulses do all their work within a single session. See what else these rays can do in Groupon’s analysis of Thermage.
“I worried all that money had been for naught until I went to the Department of Motor Vehicles for a new driver’s license—and the photo looked good. I compared it with a year-old photo and could see improvement,” an anonymous test subject wrote in the Washingtonian after receiving a Thermage radio-frequency skin-tightening treatment in 2007. Thermage’s effects do take time to fully appear—making it a good option for those who want to keep their anti-aging efforts under wraps—but those results all emerge from a single treatment session. Performed in a dermatologist’s office, the technology uses radio-frequency energy to tighten loose skin that appears as a result of aging, weight loss, or a lifetime of having especially pinchable cheeks. It’s become so popular that more than a million treatments have been performed in the past decade or so, and Thermage is now available in more than 80 countries.
During a typical 45- to 90-minute Thermage session, a temporary-tattoo-like grid is placed on the treatment area, dividing it into small sections to guide the doctor as he or she moves the device over the area. First a patient will feel a cooling sensation for comfort, then a heating sensation. That heat comes from the energy of radio-frequency pulses being absorbed by subdermal tissue—a kind of controlled thermal damage that stimulates collagen production. A slightly firmer, tighter look is often visible within a day of treatment, with further results emerging for up to six months afterward as collagen continues to regenerate.
Unlike surgery or explaining to a child where babies come from, Thermage requires no recovery time, and the final results can last several years. The face, neck, and belly are some of the most popular treatment spots, though the treatments also work on the arms, hands, thighs, and buttocks, and it can be used on all skin types. A special application tip can also temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite.
