You're probably thinking, "That sounds great, but I've never bought a car or a computer without first reading the Wikipedia definitions for car and computer —I'm not about to buy a Groupon either without a briefing." Well neither would we, and since this is everyone's first Groupon, allow us to briefly explain how it works.

How Groupon Works

Groupon is a combination of the words group and coupon. Each day, we offer an unbeatable deal on the best of Cincinnati: restaurants, spas, sporting events, theater, and more. By promising businesses a minimum number of customers, we get discounts you won't find anywhere else. We call it "collective buying power."

If you want to get the deal, just click BUY before the offer ends at midnight. If the minimum number of people (30 for today's deal) sign up by the end of the day, you'll get a printable gift certificate in your inbox the next morning that you can use whenever you want (well, at least until the deal expires—today's expires in one year). If not enough people join, no one gets the deal (and you won't be charged), so invite your friends to make sure you get the discount!

It's nice to wake up to something new every day. Some people get their daily fix from desk calendars with a cute puppy and a funny caption every morning. Groupon is like a desk calendar, except the puppy is an unbeatable discount and the funny caption is a profound reflection on the flowers and needles growing from life's cactus. Dinosaurs used to eat rocks to help them break up the harsh meals they ingested—a fact unequivocally proven when scientists found fossilized bones with rocks near them. Today's deal is slightly easier on the stomach: for $12, you get $30 worth of classically classic pub fare and sidekick libations at Slatts Pub in Blue Ash. Your Groupon is only good after 4 p.m. Attempts to redeem before this time will set off its squid-ink security tag.

Slatts Pub's menu is a classically conditioned selection of appetizers, salads, meats, and sandwiches. Kick things off with a reluctantly shareable order of potato skins ($8) or Slatts wings ($13 for 20), which come in flavors like soy ginger sesame, zesty barbecue, and blazing hot. The healthy-minded and herbivorous, meanwhile, can visit greener pastures with a baby green salad (feta cheese, candied walnuts, dried cranberries and balsamic vinaigrette, $8) or a salmon Caesar salad (salmon, romain hearts, croutons and romano, $13). Coat your fingertips with the barbecue sauce from a full slab of baby back ribs ($21), reel in Dijon-encrusted baked Alaskan Halibut ($20), or slip a half-pound gourmet burger with pepper jack ($8) between your meaty, meatless mitts. Being a full-on pub, Slatts can also grease your guzzle-pipes with a few grown-up drinks from the full bar, including wine, specialty martinis, draft and bottled beers, and a gentlemanly selection of malt scotches and aged bourbons.

Unlike the dank, basement-dwelling, leprechaun-infested dives commonly associated with the word "pub," Slatts' interior is home to a bright, inviting atmosphere where houseplants can flourish and a family outing can go unsullied by a single trivia night turned deadly. Slatts Pub also boasts an expansive outdoor patio that is waiting patiently for Captain Planet to turn the thermostat back up. In the meantime, you'll find ample seating, a solid number of HDTVs, and servers ready to take your order and money (which will be promptly turned into ridiculous origami.
