Dining atop a lake is preferable to dining beneath one, since scuba tanks make it difficult to eat soup politely and submarine captains are known for their ability to ruin a romantic moment. Dine above the water with today’s Groupon to Southern Empress Cruises, whose boat is docked at the Sunset Harbor Resort in Willis. Children aged 5 years and younger are free. Choose between the following options:

Southern Empress Cruises transports passengers to a bygone era aboard a 19th-century riverboat replica as they dine, dance, and gander at the shimmering waters of Lake Conroe. Beneath scintillating chandeliers, waterborne riders savor a scenic meal with a choice between two succulent entrées served alongside salad, bread, two sides, and a variety of dessert options. Once appetites are sated, entertainers electrify the dance floor with music from modern eras, contrasting elegantly with the Victorian surroundings, like text messages sent by telegram. Later, dance-drained sea legs can explore the elegantly adorned enclosed decks framed with polished brass and solid-oak carvings, or venture into the open areas to survey the natural surroundings, smell the lake breeze, or hear the subtle harmonies of pelican barbershop quartets.

About Southern Empress

Floating across the surface of Lake Conroe, the Southern Empress might as well be drifting back in time. The ship perfectly resembles a nineteenth-century sternwheeler riverboat, with two 18-foot paddles churning the water behind it. Inside the three sprawling decks, chandeliers gleam against embossed tin ceilings, and accents of brass and velour flaunt the same Victorian style as the floral carpets.

The boat does boast some modern amenities, however—two of its decks are climate-controlled, which means that its signature cruises can run year-round instead of stopping during iceberg-mating season. They can also head outside to the split-level third deck, which affords the best view of the lake and surrounding forest. Hosts for special engagements, such as weddings or corporate parties, can even reserve this scenery for themselves during private charters.
