About Stamford Museum & Nature Center
Founded in 1936 the Stamford Museum & Nature Center offers educational programs, arts, cultural exhibitions, and special events. Located less than 10 miles from downtown Stamford the 118-acre facility boasts a range of attractions and activities that delight visitors of all ages.
Stamford Museum: Located in the stately former summer home of department store founder Henri Bendel, the Stamford Museum offers a number of dynamic changing exhibitions. Subjects range from natural science to popular culture, fine art, and history.
Heckscher Farm: Experience farm life firsthand on our traditional New England working farm. Stroll on paths past barns, pastures, paddocks, and coops, as well as a seasonal Maple Sugar House. Visit all the animals that call Heckscher Farm home, including llamas, cows, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, and chickens, or drop in for one of the public programs led by an SM&NC Environmental Educator.
Heckscher WILD!: Bringing world habitats to life, the Heckscher WILD! exhibit features live animals and plants from across the globe. The bright new space provides visitors a chance to interact with exotic animals through feedings, demonstrations, and special events.
Nature’s Playground: Get children outside and unplugged with nature-based free play. This playground is nestled in the woods on a gently sloping hillside. Children can see the world from an animal’s point of view, scamper through a hollow log, climb into a giant bird’s nest, and zoom down the otter’s slide.
Nature Trails: The SM&NC’s scenic network of nature trails allows guests to explore a diverse eastern hardwood forest with year-round streams and seasonal vernal pools. See abundant wildlife, enjoy the sounds of Poorhouse Brook, and learn through our interpretive signage. Take a stroll on the universally accessible Wheels in the Woods boardwalk or hike the Letterboxing trails and look for clues.
