Quartets sample 5–6 wines made from cold-climate grapes, local fruit & honey inside eco-friendly winery made from straw bales
Like choosing a prom date, choosing a favorite wine necessitates sampling a variety to determine which one will produce the nicest bouquet. Enjoy the fruits of competitive courting with today's Groupon: for $10, you get a wine tasting for four people at Strawbale Winery in Renner (a $20 value).
Tucked away in an eccentric, eco-friendly winery composed of straw bales and recycled materials, Strawbale Winery's Don and Susie South craft more than 20 South Dakota wines from cold-climate grapes, locally grown fruits, and honey. Quartets amble through the farm's century-old scenery on their way to the winery's tasting room, where they can sample up to six wines. Imbibers can tongue-slap the crisp, dry American Kay Gray wine, or swirl a glass of black-currant-infused Prairie Storm wine before tossing it into the face of a rival soap-opera star. Honey from local bees infuses mead wines with the distinctive flavor of the tart cranberry-honey wine or elderberry mead. After they've sipped their fill, wine tasters keep their commemorative glass to display on shelves next to souvenir beer steins or hog-tied Kool-Aid men.
