Sweetly Lily
Lily was always sweet.
While other children were out burning down state capitols and pulling the heads off dolls to reveal railroad deeds or spring-loaded knives, Lily just sang to herself, kicking her feet and watching birds argue outside the window.
“Is she bored?” her mother’s friends would ask when she refused their tarts and Checkers manuals.
“No, my Lily isn’t bored. She’s just sweet. She wishes not to be a bother.”
Lily sat next to that window for the rest of the day, and into the night. She was there when her mother rose for work the next day, and when her mother came home that evening, she hadn’t moved. She did not eat, or grow older, or complain. Her mother, however, continued to age, until she became her grandmother, and then her ghostmother. Finally, her ghostmother faded to such transparency as to be little more than a voice clinging to a shadow. Still, Lily sat and kicked her feet, and her mother could bear her privacy no longer.
“Lily, my dear child,” said the voice made of shadow. “Why do you not play? Why do you not eat, or sleep, or age and die as I have died?”
“I do not want to be a bother,” she said, without hesitation, and her shadowmother shrugged herself out of the world, and the birds outside continued to argue, unaware that they were not the same birds, or the first birds, and that someday too, they would be shrugged.
