Creating a masterwork of art can be like wandering through a maze: after a lengthy period of reflection and contemplation, you’ll still probably starve. Appreciate the figurative risks and transcendent joys of artistic creativity with today’s Groupon: for $100, you get a choice of any four-week adult class (up to a $200 value, including class and any material fees) at the Textile Arts Center, located in Brooklyn. The Textile Arts Center provides fabric fans with a resource-laden place to meet and create fine works of woven artistry. The friendly and fiber-rich staff includes expert sewers, dye-divas, print masters, and looming luminaries who take pride in sharing their deep knowledge of all things fibrous during in-depth, hands-on, classes. Upcoming four-week adult classes for January include Intro to Screen Printing, where students will learn to master the art of printing ink designs on fabric and paper, and Basic Sewing Construction: The Trouser, which teaches needle novices the basics of pattern reading, construction, alternate ways to spell "trouser," and machine use, through easy-to-alter designs. Most classes provide everything students need to get started down a creative cloth-covered path, though the Basics of Crochet: Cold Weather Gear class requires participants to provide their own crochet, yarn, and hands. Housed in a recently renovated sweater factory, the Textile Arts Center boasts giant arched windows, a custom-designed light grid, a gallery of professional and student work, and felt-covered walls that allow artistic puppets in residence to come and go unnoticed. Class sizes are limited and space is granted on a first come, first served basis, so call ahead on a phone or cup attached to string.
